Description
This is a disused barn located approximately 35 metres southeast of the Church of St. John, dating from the late 18th century. The barn has been truncated, and its roadside gable has been rebuilt following road widening in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed, squared sandstone rubble and has a sheet asbestos roof. The barn is two storeys high with six and a half internal bays, and the upper storey features two rows of windows, giving it a three-storey appearance.
On the uphill side, there are quoins and a quoined, segmental-arched doorway to the right of centre, accompanied by a part-dismantled buttress to its left. There are three rows of segmental-arched openings, some of which are partly closed by wall stone mullions.
On the downhill side, there is a derelict apsidal horse engine house to the left with a doorway leading into the barn. The adjacent side wall of the barn has collapsed and is now supported by timber shoring. Most ground-floor windows are largely blocked, while most upper-floor windows still retain their stone divisions. There are also two square loading windows with square-faced surrounds.
Inside, the barn features brick-arched window heads and 18th-century style king-post trusses that reuse tie beams from a timber-framed building.
