Description
Bowling House and the attached garden walls date from the 17th century, with additions in 1727 and the late 18th century. The bowling house is constructed of brick and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and has a small rectangular plan. It is a single storey building with a basement. The south-east front features a basement doorway with a wooden surround. The north-east front has a two-light chamfered mullion window to the basement, and above it is a single window, now blocked, with a moulded ashlar surround. The north-west front also has a single doorway, now blocked, with a moulded ashlar surround. At the time of inspection, the building had no roof.
To the west of the bowling house is a low brick wall measuring 75 metres, topped with stone coping. This wall ramps up to a height of 3 metres towards the north-west. The north-west side of the bowling green has a brick wall with stone coping, also 75 metres long and 3 metres high, featuring a central break with a flight of eight stone steps. This wall extends 90 metres along the north-east side, with a 20 metre section made of coursed rubble.
The south-east wall is thick and low, with broad stone coping. Attached to the south-east are the walls of a rectangular kitchen garden. The north-east side is a brick wall, 75 metres long and 3 metres high, with a small hole where a former conservatory was located. The south-south-east and south-west walls are made of rubble, also standing 3 metres high.
