Description

Wilsic Hall is a small country house, originally dating back to around 1750, when it was built for Sir Francis Tofield. It has undergone alterations and additions in the 19th century, and again in the 20th century. The house is constructed with roughcast rendering, and has a stone slate roof. It is double-pile, standing three storeys high at its centre, with a later L-shaped two-storey wing to the east, and an extended two-storey range adding to the west.

The front, overlooking the garden, has seven bays. The central doorway features a part-glazed door set within a swept-shouldered architrave with a pulvinated frieze and consoled pediment above. Flanking the doorway are sash windows with glazing bars, featuring projecting sills set within ashlar surrounds. A canted, single-storey bay window on the left has scrolled architraves to unequally-hung 15-pane sashes, along with a pierced balustrade. Bays six and seven also have unequally-hung 15-pane sashes. The first floor has casements with glazing bars within ashlar surrounds; the windows in bays six and seven have lower sills. The second floor has centre-pivoted six-pane casements. A modillioned wooden cornice runs along the hipped roof, with tall corniced stacks at each end and a shorter ridge stack on the left.

The wing on the right has two bays, with tall sashes and glazing bars, similar in style to the canted bay on the left. It has a shaped end gable with finials. The wing on the left has three bays, featuring a canted-bay window, a matching tripartite sash, and 15-pane sashes. The first floor windows have ashlar surrounds with a 9-pane sash on the left and an altered window on the right. A tall end stack is present on the left.

The entrance front has a six-bay central section, with a single-storey, canted porch addition. The porch has a glazed door within an archivolted surround with moulded imposts and a keystone. The sides of the porch, originally open and balustraded, now have casements in archivolts. The cornice rises to form a pediment over the door. Other bays are similar to the garden front. A one-bay wing on the left has a shaped gable and finials. A three-bay wing, projecting forward on the right, features shaped end gables and corniced stacks.

The right return (of the garden front) includes a French window with decorative glazing bars in a scrolled architrave, and an oriel bay window with a dentil cornice.

Inside, bay four of the porch has an old panelled door within a stone architrave. A later balustraded staircase features, with a modillioned cornice to the stairwell. A staff room in the east wing has a marble fireplace with an iron firebasket and an egg and dart cornice beneath a coved ceiling.
