Description

East Lodge and the attached forecourt wall are an entrance lodge built around 1750 by James Paine for Josias Wordsworth. Constructed from ashlar magnesian limestone with a graduated Westmorland slate roof, the lodge is two storeys high and has three bays on one side. It is designed as a pavilion facing the West Lodge across the entrance to Wadworth Hall. The attached wall features a gateway on the east side of the forecourt leading to the hall.

The lodge has a plinth and round-arched arcading with openings on each floor set within recessed panels. The central doorway has a 20th-century door and a four-pane overlight, framed by an architrave with a rusticated surround and a double keystone that breaks into a pediment. On either side of the doorway are 24-pane sash windows with double keystones; the right window was previously altered into a doorway and now has panelling below the sash. On the first floor, there is an impost band beneath unequally-hung 12-pane sashes, with voussoirs aligned with the stone courses. The eaves cornice forms a gutter for the hipped roof, which has a rendered ridge stack on the right. The right return features a round-arched recess with a Venetian window that has blind side lights flanking a 24-pane sash.

The forecourt wall, which is set back to the front left of the lodge, includes a doorway in a raised panel with a cornice. The copings sweep down to a lower section of the wall on the left, which connects with the wing walls of the hall.
