Description

The Statue of Joseph Locke and its enclosure were created between 1862 and 1866 by Baron Carlo Marochetti, commissioned by the Institute of Civil Engineers. The statue is made of bronze and stands on a polished red granite pedestal, while the enclosure is constructed from Portland stone.

The over-life-size statue is located within a square enclosure in Locke Park. It depicts Joseph Locke in a standing position, wearing a plain frock-coat and cravat, looking out over the park. In his left hand, he holds a partially unfurled scroll of papers, and his right arm is bent, with his hand grasping his coat lapel. The statue is mounted on a high, square pedestal of red granite, which has the name "Joseph Locke" inscribed on the front face. Surrounding the statue is a square enclosure featuring a Portland stone balustrade with turned balusters, along with square, panelled corner piers topped with ornamental square capitals.

Additionally, a Barnsley Heritage blue plaque is affixed to the right-hand side of the pedestal.
