Description
Balk Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1800, with later additions. It is constructed of roughcast sandstone and features a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and three bays. It has a plinth and large, exposed quoins. The central door, which is from the 20th century, has a three-pane overlight and is set in an ashlar surround with swept shoulders and a corbelled cornice. A ground-floor sill band connects the 20th-century casement windows, which have glazing bars and are in original square-faced surrounds. There are three similar windows on the first floor. The roof is hipped and has rendered brick end stacks. A later addition on the right side of the building is not of special interest. At the rear, there is a very tall stair window with glazing bars, flanked by two five-light, square-faced, mullioned windows, which have three-light windows above them. Inside, there is a cantilevered stone staircase that now features a 20th-century balustrade.
