Description

This is a raised grave slab dating from around 1753, located approximately 30 metres west of the north side of the tower of the Church of All Saints in Silkstone. The slab is made of sandstone and features a moulded edge with arched decoration at the head. It commemorates William Downing of Stainborough Inn, who died on 22nd July 1753 at the age of 38. The inscription includes a verse that reads:

"Time was I stood as thou dost now And viewd ye dead as thou dost now E'r long thoul't lie as low as I And others stand and look on thee."
