Description
This raised graveslab, dating from around 1705, is located approximately 10 metres south of the east end of the chancel of the Church of All Hallows in High Hoyland. Made of sandstone, the slab features intricate relief carvings of foliage and flowers along the edge. At the top, there is a cartouche supported by winged children, inscribed with the phrase "Mors est Ianua Vita." The graveslab commemorates John Copley, a tanner from Clayton, his wife, and their son Phillip, with the following inscriptions: John Copley, who died in 1679 at the age of 61 years; his wife, who died in 1705 at the age of 105 years; and their son Phillip, who also died in 1705 at the age of 50 years. This graveslab is an elaborate and well-preserved example of its type.
