Description
This building is a barn, formerly a house and barn, located to the east of Lower Lewden Farmhouse. It dates from the late 16th century and 17th century, with later alterations. The structure is made of coursed rubble and features interval timber-framing on the east side. It has a slate roof with three ventilator hoods and is two storeys high.
The east gable front includes a single doorway on the right with a plank door. The south front has a doorway on the left, followed by two small openings, a boarded window, and another doorway on the right, beyond which is an addition with another small opening. Above, to the left, there is a two-light boarded window and, to the right, a loft doorway. The west gable front features a partially blocked east entrance with a four-light 20th-century window above a loft opening.
Inside, the eastern section contains three bays of largely complete timber framing, with braces, smaller braces, and collar trusses featuring overlapping purlins. The later west addition has simple, massive collar trusses.
