Description
The pillared barn, located approximately 20 metres south of Steeple Lodge, is a Grade II* listed Dutch barn built around 1775 for the 2nd Earl of Strafford. It features coursed, squared sandstone pillars and a stone slate roof. The barn is single-storey with six bays plus triangular end bays. Tapered, cylindrical pillars are set on wallstone plinths and support a hipped roof.
Inside, the barn has simple king-post trusses and tusk-tenoned purlins. This notable building is part of the Wentworth Castle estate and was constructed to enhance the former service entrance. It is one of the earliest examples of its type and has a very unusual plan. The barn was undergoing renovation at the time of resurvey.
