Description
The grave of Ebenezer Elliot is located approximately 40 metres southeast of the south porch of the Church of All Saints. This raised gravestone dates from around 1849 and is made of sandstone, featuring an iron-railed enclosure. The enclosure has spear-headed railings and rounded corner finials, surrounding an ashlar plinth that supports a large slab with an angled top face. The slab is inscribed in bold letters with the following text:
'EBENEZER ELLIOT / DIED DECEMBER 1 1849 / AGED 68 YEARS FANNY GARTSIDE / HIS WIFE / DIED DECEMBER 4 1856 / AGED 75 YEARS'.
Ebenezer Elliot, born in Masborough, Rotherham in 1781, is known as the 'Corn Law Rhymer' due to his literary contributions, including The Corn Law Rhymes published in 1831, which were part of his political efforts to repeal the corn laws. His works provide a vivid depiction of the struggles faced by the poor during that era.
