Description
The churchyard wall, railings, and gate to the Church of St Philip and St James in York were built in 1867 by George Fowler Jones. This structure forms the south-west boundary of the churchyard and is approximately 30 metres long. The wall is made of squared rubble stone, standing about 1.5 metres high, and features sloped coping. It includes piers that are square in plan with truncated pyramidal caps. The railings are made of cast iron, with horizontal sections that are square in section and have a serrated upper edge. These railings are set diagonally between chamfered square section standards topped with pyramidal finials. The gates consist of cross-braced horizontal rails with a serrated top rail and wrought-iron leaf finials. This structure is included for its group value as an integral part of the Church of St Philip and St James.
