Description

No. 16 Clifton Green is a house built shortly after 1836. It features mottled brick with limestone ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The building is two storeys high. The facade includes a one-bay gable on the left side, which has a two-light mullioned window on each floor. Both windows have leaded glazing and an heraldic shield in coloured glass in each light. The ground-floor windows have shouldered arches above them, while the upper window has trefoiled lights. The gable is coped. The right-hand return wall is mostly blind, except for a one-light window with a shouldered head on the ground floor.

Set back at the right, where it meets a projecting wing, is a two-storey turret with a square plan and a pyramid roof. The ground floor of the turret features a doorway with a chamfered surround, a shouldered lintel, and a boarded door with iron strap hinges. Above this, at the first floor, there is a chamfered slit window. The right-hand return wall of the turret has a similar window at an intermediate level. The turret roof is detailed with lead rolls at the angles, a finial, and a pierced metal weather vane bearing the initials 'JR'. There are chimneys located on the left-hand return wall of the main range and towards the right behind the entrance turret.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this house was built as a gardener's cottage for the Roper family, who owned Clifton Croft on Greencliffe Drive.
