Description
The horse drinking trough and canopy, dated 1883, is located in York. The trough is made of grey granite and has a rectangular shape with rounded corners. It is supported by rectangular blocks of granite and features a shallower trough underneath. On the north-east side, there are two granite bollards. The south-east end of the trough rises in an ogee shape, which once held a spout, and a drinking fountain bowl projects from the outer side, below which is the inscribed date '1883'.
The canopy is made of oak and has a tiled roof that is half-hipped, featuring alternating bands of plain and scalloped tiles. The gablets are oak and are pierced with trefoils. The roof is supported by four posts, with curved braces leading to a rectangular framework of plates that support the struts and rafters. On the two long sides, there are cast-iron signs facing inwards that read: 'ANY PERSON INJURING THE TROUGH, COVER, SEAT, OR TREES ON CLIFTON GREEN WILL BE PROSECUTED AS THE LAW DIRECTS'. The short sides have plates inscribed: 'THE POLICE ARE INSTRUCTED TO APPREHEND ANY ONE PLAYING WITH OR DIRTYING THE WATER'.
