Description

No. 1 Fawcett Street is a house that has been converted into a public house, likely built in the late 18th century and converted around 1830, with 20th-century alterations and extensions. The building is made of lined and whitewashed rendered brick sitting on a painted brick plinth, featuring timber doorcases and window surrounds, as well as a timber cornice with dentils and modillions on both fronts. The roof is covered with pantiles and has rendered brick stacks, one of which is truncated.

On the Fawcett Street side, the building has a two-storey, four-bay front. The door and window surrounds are adorned with partly fluted pilasters and have dentilled cornice hoods. The central door, accessed by steps, consists of six moulded panels, while the door at the left end has two leaves with two panels each. The ground floor windows have four fixed panes with opening top lights, arranged as two lights to the left of the front door and three to the right. A moulded sill band extends over the right front. The first floor features three 16-pane sash windows with painted sills.

On the Paragon Street side, the building has a two-storey, three-bay front. There is a blocked glazed and panelled door to the left of two 2-light windows, all styled similarly to the Fawcett Street front. The first floor has two 16-pane sash windows. The interior has not been inspected. This public house has been known as The Paragon and The Market Tavern, and in 1838 it was referred to as the Cattle Market Inn.
