Description

This building comprises a shop and flat, dating to circa 1830, with alterations made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of painted stucco and timber, with a slate roof. The exterior is two storeys plus an attic. The ground floor features a shopfront with an earlier doorcase to the left. The shopfront is characterised by pilasters on each side, raised panels, and brackets decorated with leaf carving. A third pilaster sits between the shop doorway and a door leading to a passageway. The shop window is divided into three large panes with rounded upper corners; two face forwards and one is splayed to the recessed shop door on the right. The recessed door has a glazed panel above a raised and fielded panel, and the passageway door has four panels. To the left of the shopfront is a doorway for No. 16a, with a timber doorcase featuring engaged fluted columns, panelled reveals, an overlight with margin panes and diagonal glazing bars, and a six-panelled door with raised and fielded panels. The first-floor windows are sash windows without glazing bars; a left-hand window has a timber architrave, and to the right is a canted oriel with a timber gutter on brackets. Two lines of inscription in large, raised letters run across the facade, reading 'TM - OXTOBY - & SON. PAINTERS - PAPERHANGERS - DECORATORS', interrupted by the windows. A flat-roofed 20th-century attic dormer is visible on the left. A modillioned gutter cornice sits above, and an axial chimney is present. The interior was not inspected. The building’s group value stems from its contribution to the character of the surrounding area.
