Description
Church Cottages is a row of three cottages located on North Street in York, dating from the late 15th century. The cottages have been altered and modernized in the 20th century. They are timber-framed with infilling of orange-buff brick laid in stretcher bond, and the roof is partly tiled and partly covered with pantiles.
The exterior features a two-storey range with a gable end facing North Street. The North Street front has two bays, with a one-bay wing to the right, while the front facing All Saints Lane has four unequal bays. The adjacent fronts are jettied, supported by a dragon post at the corner. The North Street side includes a 20th-century board door in the wing, a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor of the gable wall, and a 2-light casement window on the first floor. Inside the gable end, there is an exposed crown post roof truss with curved braces and struts.
Nos. 1 and 2 on All Saints Lane feature 20th-century board doors and unequal 9-pane sash windows on the ground floor, with the right end bay having a 20-pane fixed light. The first floor has three 2-light casements, all of which have square lattice glazing. The dragon post is decorated with carved quatrefoils, rosettes, and embattled cresting, and the jetty plates are lodged.
The interior has not been fully inspected, but records indicate exposed joists in the ground floor rooms and a dragon-beam in No. 31 North Street. The roof consists of crown post trusses with common rafters and collar purlins, and no fireplaces remain.
