Description

The Old Rectory, formerly known as No.7A All Saints Rectory, is a building located on Tanner Row in York. It dates back to around 1600 and was likely converted for domestic use in the late 17th century when a chimney stack was added. The building has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with infilling of orange-pink brick in both random and stretcher bonds, some of which are plastered and whitewashed. The roof is covered with pantiles and has a rendered stack.

The structure is two storeys tall with an attic and has a two-window front that is gabled towards the street, showcasing jettied upper storeys. The entrance is located in a rear access passage connected to No.7. The ground floor windows consist of unequal 20-pane sashes, while the first floor has two 8-pane horizontal sliding sashes. The attic window, dating from around 1700, is a 12-pane sash, and all windows have painted sills.

On the right side of the building, there are three bays over two storeys. The ground floor has two blocked original window openings, and the first floor features two 2-light casements with diamond lattice glazing—one in its original opening and one that has been inserted.

The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate a fine staircase with carved square newels from around 1640, originally from Alne Hall, which was installed in 1937. The framing is exposed in the east and west walls, along with stop-chamfered beams and joists. The attic has a gypsum plaster floor, and the roof consists of principal rafter trusses with framed-in purlins.
