Description
Upper Poppleton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that has been updated with 21st-century additions for a later conflict. It is situated at the center of the village, within a landscaped area on a small roundabout at the junction of The Green and Main Street, and is near several Grade II-listed buildings around the village green.
The memorial features a stone obelisk with a moulded foot, which rises from a four-sided, tapered plinth that is set on a two-stepped base. The east face of the plinth displays a dedicatory inscription and the names of the fallen in incised lettering. The inscription reads, "ERECTED IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF THIS VILLAGE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914-18." Below this inscription, the names of 10 men who died are listed within a recessed fielded panel. Beneath the panel is an additional name followed by the words, "THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE."
On the north side of the plinth, there is an incised name of a serviceman who died in 2010 in Afghanistan, with the lettering painted black.
