Description
Calm Cottage is a house built around 1820, with alterations made in 1973 by Francis Johnson. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and has a Westmorland slate roof. It has a T-shaped layout with a central hallway entry and a small bay window extension to the garden on the left side. The house is two stories tall and has three bays.
There are steps leading up to a half-glazed door that features an overlight with diamond motif glazing, set within a fluted Doric door-case. This door is flanked by shallow bays that have cornices and contain curved 16-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there are sash windows with glazing bars set beneath cambered brick arches. The house has paired gutter brackets and a hipped roof with a stack that rises through the rear pitch.
Inside, the staircase has plain square-section balusters arranged on an oval plan. The drawing room features a dado, frieze, and door-cases, all adorned with a bead motif.
