Description
No. 37 Parliament Street is a former pair of houses that were combined and altered to create a public house, which is now a shop. Built between 1836 and 1839, it has later 19th-century alterations and a shopfront that incorporates elements from both the 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior features rough cast and painted surfaces, with a moulded timber eaves cornice and a slate roof topped with a brick stack.
The building is four stories high and has a two-window front. The shopfront includes glazed and panelled doors set between plate glass windows, all framed by fluted paired pilasters with imposts, beneath a broad fascia and moulded cornice. The cornice projects forward beneath three-light oriel windows, which have arched centre lights and are framed by narrow pilaster strips, topped with a frieze of beaded panels and a moulded cornice.
On the second and third floors, there are one-pane sash windows with raised architraves and moulded sills, which are taller on the second floor and situated above sunk panels. A moulded inn sign panel is located between the first-floor windows, featuring fluted pilasters, a round-arched cornice, a broken pediment, and spandrels and tympanum that are moulded in low relief. The interior has not been inspected.
