Description

The Moat Hotel, originally St Thomas Hospital, was built in 1862. It is constructed of yellow brick with some stone and painted stone dressings, topped with a slate roof. The building is symmetrical, featuring two storeys and five bays, with the outer and central bays slightly projecting under shaped gables that have copings and ball finials. The windows are adorned with chamfered painted lintels, sills, and mullions, and are fitted with 4 over 4 pane sashes. The outer bays contain 2-light windows and narrow chamfered slit openings in the gables, while the second and fourth bays have 3-light windows. The central bay features a 2-light window above a porch, which has a plaque inscribed with 'St THOMAS'S HOSPITAL. RE-BUILT A.D. 1862'. The open porch has chamfered brick sides with painted stone bases, and caps designed as moulded brackets supporting a segmental brick arch with a keystone. The hipped porch roof is slated, and the door consists of four recessed panels with a plain overlight that has a segmental top. Ridge chimneys are located between the first and second bays and the fourth and fifth bays. The left and right return walls mirror this design, each having three bays with 3-light windows in the outer bays and a narrow central bay with a shaped gable and 2-light windows. The left-hand return wall also includes a doorway in its central bay. The interior has not been inspected.
