Description

A terrace of four houses, numbers 188 to 194, built around 1860, with later alterations; number 188 is now a nursing home. The houses are constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with timber eaves guttering and a shallow-pitched slate roof featuring brick stacks. The front facade has nine windows and three stories. Number 188 has a double-fronted design featuring moulded panelled double doors with an overlight, set within a projecting doorcase with panelled pilaster jambs and an entablature with a modillioned cornice. Flanking the door are two-story canted bay windows with modillioned cornices above and four-pane sashes on both floors. Above the door is a 12-pane sash window, and on the second floor, three unequal nine-pane sashes. Numbers 190 and 192 each have doorcases with plain jambs and dentilled flat cornice hoods supported by heavy grooved brackets, and doors consisting of four sunk panels recessed within panelled pilaster reveals, each with a margin-glazed, segment-headed overlight. The entrance to number 194 is on the left return. Ground floor windows for numbers 190, 192 and 194 are one-story canted bays with detailing similar to that found at number 188. The first and second floor windows are four-pane sashes; the first floor windows are over a painted stone sill band. The second floor windows are smaller and have painted stone sills. All windows, except for those in the bays, are set within flat brick arches. The left return of number 194 has a glazed and panelled door within a sunk panel pilaster doorcase with an entablature and modillioned cornice. A margin-glazed staircase window is above the door, and a second-floor window is a four-pane sash. The left return also features gable bargeboards on shaped brackets. The interior was not inspected.
