Description

This is a terrace of fifteen houses, numbers 7 to 13, built between 1902 and 1905 by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. The buildings are constructed of whitewashed brick with pantile roofs and are of group value, demonstrating an important contribution to the development of low-cost housing in Britain.

The terrace consists of a central pair of houses topped by a wide, projecting gable, flanked to the left by a spinal range containing two dwellings and to the right by a single dwelling, with asymmetrical end gables framing one dwelling each. Replacement glazed doors and standard "New Earswick" sized window panes are present throughout. The central pair of houses have two four-light casements flanking recessed doors within porches. To the left, the spinal range features two four-light canted bays and an entrance door to number 8; to the right, there are a three-light and a single-light window to number 12. The outer bays are as follows: number 7 breaks forward with a recessed porch to the left and a two- and three-light window to the right. Number 13 is set back and has a door with a sidelight to the right and a single-light window to the left. The first floor has two- and three-light casements, with the spinal range windows being flat-topped half dormers. Stacks have been removed.

The design and practices used at New Earswick influenced the Government Manual on low-cost housing following the Addison Act of 1919, which itself was shaped by the experience gained at New Earswick.
