Description
The Church of Saint Matthew is a Grade II listed building, constructed in 1854 by G T Andrews. It is built from sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof and a limestone spire, showcasing an early 14th century Gothic Revival style. The church includes a north-west tower, a four-bay nave with a south porch and a north aisle, as well as a two-bay chancel with a vestry to the north.
The three-stage tower is supported by buttresses with offsets and has an angle stair turret at the second stage. Each stage features trefoil-headed lancets and slits in the stair turret. The tower has twin-light bell-openings with quatrefoils above them, all set under hoodmoulds, and is topped with a broach spire. The nave and recessed chancel also have buttresses with offsets.
The south porch contains a pointed plank doorway framed by slender columns on the jambs, along with a hoodmould that has face stops. The church features two-light windows with trefoils and quatrefoils above, and a continuous moulded sill band. There is a pointed priest's entrance to the chancel with a plank door and hoodmould, as well as a three-light west window and a three-light east window, both under hoods with face stops and quatrefoils in the gables.
Inside, the church has a three-bay arcade to the north supported by double-chamfered cylindrical piers and a double-chamfered chancel arch. The interior also features mainly 19th-century stained glass.
