Description
The Dean Court Hotel, which includes parts of three houses, is located on Duncombe Place in York. These buildings date from the mid-18th century and were subdivided in the early 19th century. They were remodeled in 1976. The early 19th-century railings are attached to the front steps. The exterior features buff-pink mottled brick laid in Flemish bond on a brick plinth, with a timber doorcase and guttering, and a hipped pantile roof with brick stacks.
The front of the building is three stories high and has four bays. A flight of steps with a flat handrail set on turned standards leads to the doorcase, which is flanked by plain pilasters and topped with an open pediment. The door consists of six raised and fielded panels with a radial fanlight above, set in a panelled reveal. On the ground floor, there are 16-pane sash windows, while the first floor has 16-pane sashes beside a three-light segmental bow window with 12-pane sashes. The second floor features four sash windows, including one unequal 9-pane sash and three 12-pane sashes. The moulded guttering is supported by paired modillions. The ground and first floor sashes have flat arches made of orange gauged brick, interrupted by four-course raised brick bands on the first and second floors.
The interior has not been inspected. The cast-iron railings at the steps are also notable. This building is included for its group value as part of Duncan Place.
