Description

The building comprises two houses, now shops and offices, situated at 78 Low Petergate and 82 Goodramgate, York. Number 78 Low Petergate’s right side was rebuilt in the late 18th century, while number 82 Goodramgate dates to the late 18th century, with later alterations and shopfronts added in the late 19th century to both properties.

Number 78 Low Petergate is timber-framed with a stuccoed front, having a right return constructed of orange-brown brick in stretcher bond. Number 82 Goodramgate is built of orange-brown brick in Flemish bond. Both have timber shopfronts and pantile roofs, with stone coping and brick kneelers to number 78 Low Petergate, and a slate roof to number 82 Goodramgate. Brick stacks are present on both buildings.

The Low Petergate front of number 78 is three storeys and two bays, with jettied first and second floors. A shopfront returns on the right side, featuring corner glazed and panelled double doors. The shop windows have plate glass over carved panel risers, framed by plain pilasters, a frieze, and a shaped panel fascia decorated with sunk quatrefoils. First floor windows are four-pane sashes, while the second floor has three-by-six-pane Yorkshire sashes. The Goodramgate front shows a gable end of number 78 Low Petergate to the left of a three-storey, two-window front to number 82 Goodramgate. The gable end has four-pane sash windows on the first and second floors, with a blocked opening having a cambered head in the attic. Number 82 Goodramgate features a plain shopfront with a plate glass window beneath a deep fascia and cornice incorporating a roller blind. A door with six fielded panels and an overlight is recessed within a plain pilaster doorcase with a beaded panel frieze and moulded cornice. First and second floor windows are four-pane sashes with painted sills and segmental brick arches. Raised brick bands delineate the first and second floors.

The interior of the section of number 82 Goodramgate incorporated within number 78 Low Petergate includes a close string staircase with a Chinese fret balustrade and a ramped-up moulded handrail, spanning from the ground to the second floor. A moulded cornice is found in a corner room on the first floor. Number 82 Goodramgate was formerly listed separately on 19th August 1971.
