Description

This building, known as Nos. 1 and 1A Low Ousegate, is a house with a shop that dates from between 1810 and 1820, with later alterations and a 20th-century shopfront. The exterior was renovated in 1992. It is constructed of orange-grey brick in Flemish bond, featuring window arches made of orange gauged brick, and sits on a limestone plinth by the river. The building has a timber mutule eaves cornice that returns on the right front, leading to a slate hipped roof with brick stacks.

The Low Ousegate front has three storeys and three windows. At the left end, there are paired doorcases with shaped-panel pilasters and bracketed console cornices, which are decorated with acanthus leaf carvings. The doors consist of six raised and fielded panels beneath tall overlights, accessed by stone steps. To the right, there is a shopfront that extends to the river front. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows are unequal 9-pane sashes, all featuring stone sills and flat brick arches. A fluted bowl rainwater head is located at the right end of the cornice.

The river front has three storeys and a basement on a chamfered plinth, with five windows. The plinth includes paired plank doors beneath a heavy tooled lintel to the right of the centre, and further right, there is a blocked opening with a shaped lintel. The basement features four 16-pane sashes. In the centre of the upper floors, there are two tall round-headed staircase windows with brick archivolts that extend through two storeys. The flanking windows on the ground and first floors are 12-pane sashes, while those on the second floor are unequal 9-pane sashes, all with flat arches and stone sills. The interior has not been inspected.
