Description
Fishergate House is a house, now used as offices, built in 1837 with 20th-century alterations. It was designed by J.B. and W. Atkinson for Thomas Laycock. The house is constructed of grey brick with stone dressings and has a hipped slate roof. The east-facing front is divided into three bays by paired brick giant pilasters, which have stone bases and caps. The left-hand bay is two storeys high, with two glazing bar sash windows on each floor. The central bay is narrower and includes a 20th-century casement window with glazing bars at first floor level, positioned above the porch. The right-hand bay has two glazing bar sash windows on the ground floor, with a smaller sashed window to their left. Upper floor windows have been altered to correspond with the internal three-storey arrangement at this end of the house, and there are six-pane sash windows at both first and second floor levels. The ashlar porch has two Ionic columns in antis and an entablature with a cornice and blocking course. Side walls feature round-headed windows set within brick panels. The eaves of the main roof are projecting and a central balustraded flat area surrounds a lantern light. Brick chimneys are positioned at each corner and on the side walls. The interior, which has not been inspected, is noted by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments England to have good quality original plasterwork and fittings, including a cantilevered stone staircase, cast-iron balustrading, and a curved landing with two composite columns to the windows. The entrance hall features an arched recess and moulded ceiling, and the vestibule has pilasters, niches and domed oval openings. The first floor includes an arcaded gallery around an oval light well, with pilasters and round arches.
