Description
The summerhouse, built around 1774, is located approximately 75 metres south-west of The Mount School. Originally part of the garden of Holgate House at No. 163 Holgate Road, it was moved to its current site, likely in the early 20th century. The structure features stone steps and a timber frame with a lead ogee roof, designed in an octagonal shape and raised on a stepped circular base.
The exterior is supported by attached Doric columns, which hold up an entablature with a fluted frieze and a dentilled cornice that projects over each column. One bay is open for access, while the other bays are fitted with 12-pane sash windows above blind balustrades made of sturdy turned balusters, with the rail serving as a plain window sill. The roof is topped with a finial that ends in a dragon weathervane.
Inside, the summerhouse has an attached bench, with a single fielded panel beneath each window. The ceiling is boarded. Notably, the summerhouse was used by the American Quaker grammarian Lindley Murray during his time at Holgate House.
