Description

This building, known as the cottage attached at the rear of number 25, is located on High Petergate in York. It is a former house or workshop, now primarily used for storage on the ground floor, while the first floor has been incorporated into number 25 Young's Hotel. The cottage dates from the late 18th century, though it likely has earlier origins and has undergone later alterations.

The exterior features rendered and white-washed brick with a stone-coped slate roof. It has a two-storey gabled front that is partly obscured by a late 19th-century wing connecting it to number 25. On the right side, there is a door with six sunk panels and a radial fanlight, which is adorned with beaded iron glazing bars. This door is set within a doorcase that has panelled pilasters topped with palm leaf capitals, a frieze decorated with festooned medallions and urns, and a flat cornice hood. To the left of the door, a window is hidden, while on the first floor, there is a 16-pane sash window. The front of the cottage also features three round-arched niches; one contains a sculpted classical bust, and the other two hold putti—one with a lyre and the other with a figleaf. It is worth noting that the house was previously misidentified as the birthplace of Guy Fawkes. The interior has not been inspected.
