Description
The building is a stable and granary, with an adjoining house to the right, located approximately 60 metres east of Thornton Hall. It was constructed in the 1760s, likely by John Billington, and has undergone later alterations and additions at the rear. The structure is made of red brick laid in Flemish bond and features a pantile roof. It is U-shaped in plan, with the house situated at the rear right.
The west front, which faces the Hall, is two storeys high and consists of seven bays, with a central bay that has a pediment and projects forward. There is a moulded plinth at the base. The central carriage entrance has an 8-pane overlight (the doors have been removed) and is set beneath a recessed round-headed panel that contains a 12-pane casement window, with a brick hoodmould extending on either side as a first-floor band. To the left, there are three recessed part-glazed hatches with two-fold doors beneath three panes, and to the right end, there are two 6-pane casements. A three-course brick band runs along the first floor, topped with an ovolo-moulded course. The first-floor windows are all 6-pane casements, featuring rubbed brick flat arches and stucco cills. The eaves cornice is stepped and dentilled, with a raking cornice and a stone-coped gable at the pediment.
The right return, which faces the road, has a plinth, pilaster strips, and a brick eaves cornice. There is a low storey house section to the right that matches the style and materials of the main building, featuring 16-pane recessed sash windows under segmental arches, along with axial and end stacks.
