Description

Old Mill House at William Blyth Hoe Hill Yard is a former clay milling house that is currently disused. It dates from before 1908, likely from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped pantile roof with a rectangular plan. It is partly dilapidated, and although most of the machinery was removed in 2000, some remnants remain, including a worm drive screw. The mill house is situated next to the summer drying sheds and is part of a significant group that is important both visually and in terms of tile production. The mill house appears on the 1908 Ordnance Survey map, which was surveyed in 1886 and revised in 1906. This site is part of a notable industrial complex, which, along with the associated Blyth yard at Ings, is the only tilery on the Humber Bank producing handmade roof tiles using traditional methods, and possibly the only one in the country. The complete tile production process can be observed here, from the mill house that processes the clay, through the drying sheds for storing the formed tiles, to the kiln for firing them, which includes an office or lobby for the site foreman and those supervising the kiln firing.
