Description

Tyrwhitt Hall is a late medieval building that has been extended and altered in the 17th and 18th centuries, with further modifications made later. It is constructed of pinkish brick and features a stepped and cogged eaves cornice, with the older sections concealing a timber-framed structure. The roofs are pantiled, and there are brick chimneys, including one stack at the junction with diagonal shafts. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys, with three irregular bays on each wing. The fenestration is varied, including leaded casements, Yorkshire lights, and a tripartite double-hung sash window with glazing bars. The entrance features a six-panel door with a radial fanlight set in a simple pilastered surround.

Inside, the hall retains elements of its medieval open design, including two different crown post trusses. One truss has a moulded arched tie beam supported by short corbelled shafts against the wall posts, while the other features deeper braces. Both trusses have long arch braces connecting the tie to the crown post and short butt purlins. There is one original door and two other beamed rooms. One of these rooms showcases 17th-century wainscoting, while another has an elaborate 18th-century plaster ceiling, likely crafted by artisans from Hull.

Tyrwhitt Hall is part of a group with the Church of St Peter, the churchyard cross and wall, and The Vicarage.
