Description

The Exchange Club, located at 1 Bigby Street, is a mid-18th century building that features yellow and red brick. It consists of two houses that create a slightly irregular unit, with a symmetrical gable end that projects towards the roadway, showcasing a large stepped gable. The structure has two storeys and attics, rising to three storeys in the centre, where there is a three-storeyed, three-window bay topped by a parapet with three sections of balustrade. The central windows of this bay on the ground and first floors are adorned with moulded architraves, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice supported by two consoles. There is one window on each side of the bay.

The main wing of No 11 has two storeys with a parapet and a band between the storeys, featuring five irregularly spaced windows on the first floor. A rectangular brick porch is located in the corner. The glazing bars have been removed from the windows of this wing, but they remain intact elsewhere. The east wing of the Exchange Club has two storeys and three windows, with brick bands above both storeys. The central window features a semi-circular head with Gothick glazing bars. The building boasts a well-crafted central doorcase with two columns that exhibit bark rustication, triglyph friezes, and a dentilled triangular pediment that is broken over the semi-circular head of the doorway. All windows in both houses, except for the central windows of the bay, are hung sashes in wooden cases that are almost flush with the wall, featuring flat arched heads with keystones and plain cills. The Exchange Club, along with Nos 8, 11, 12, and 14, forms a cohesive group.
