Description

This is a threshing barn located approximately 25 metres south of Garthorpe Hall, dated 1791. It is built of red brick, with the south gable end rendered, and features a pantile roof. The barn stands two storeys high and has five internal bays.

On the east side, there is a projecting central bay with a full-height wagon entrance that has an original timber lintel and a boarded upper section. Below this, there are double board doors hung on a pair of hinges. The side bays each contain two tiers of six closely spaced breather slits. The eaves are stepped, and the gables are raised and capped with brick.

The west side mirrors the east side but features a lower wagon entrance with double board doors beneath an original timber lintel, which is a reused section of timber frame. The north gable end has two tiers of five closely spaced breather slits, with a central boarded pitching hatch above, flanked by X-shaped wrought-iron tie-bar ends. Above this gable, there are triple stepped breather slits and wrought-iron letters reading "C P C P."

The south gable end has a similar arrangement of breather slits and a pitching hatch, with wrought-iron figures reading "1 7 6 1," although the 7 and likely the 6 have slipped out of position. Comparison with other dated barns in the area suggests that 1791 is the more likely date for its construction.

The interior features a five-bay roof that incorporates reused sections of oak timber framing, although it has not been fully inspected. An adjoining range to the west is not of special interest.
