Description
SE 81 NW GARTHORPE AND HIGH STREET FOCKERBY (west side) Garthorpe 4/12 Barn approximately 25 metres south of Garthorpe Hall
GV II
Threshing barn. Dated 1791. Red brick, rendered to south gable end. Pantile roof. 2-storey height, 5 internal bays. East side has projecting central bay with full-height waggon entrance beneath original timber lintel with boarded upper section and inserted lintel with pair of harr-hung board doors below. Side bays each have 2 tiers of 6 closely-spaced breather slits. Stepped eaves. Raised brick-coped gables. West side is similar to east, but with lower waggon entrance containing double board doors beneath original timber lintel ( a reused section of timber frame). North gable end has 2 tiers of 5 closely spaced breather slits, with central boarded pitching hatch above flanked by X-shaped wrought-iron tie-bar ends. Gable above has triple stepped breather slits and wrought-iron letters:

South gable end has similar arrangement of breather slits and pitching hatch, and wrought-iron figures:

the 7, and probably the 6, having slipped out of position. Comparison with other dated barns in the area suggests that 1791 is the more likely date. Interior: 5-bay roof incorporates reused sections of oak timber framing;not fully inspected. Range adjoining to west is not of special interest.
