Description
The Old Kiln, located to the west at William Blyth Ings Yard in Barton upon Humber, is a down-draft kiln dating from the late 19th century to early 20th century. Constructed of red brick, this kiln is either the original structure shown on the 1886 Ordnance Survey map or an early rebuild. The bricks used are machine-made and likely produced in Barton from the 1870s and 1880s onwards. The kiln has been re-lined, and its arched roof has been renewed with heat-resistant material cast in situ. Arched fire-holes are still visible on each side, although some have been bricked up. The kiln was hand-fired until 1975, when a screw feed was introduced, which remains in the lean-to coal sheds that were repaired or rebuilt around the 1970s, maintaining the original design.
The chimney, dating from the late 19th century to early 20th century, and the night lobby, from the early 20th century, are also made of red brick, with a pantile roof and stack. Inside the lobby, there is a fireplace used by night shift workers to monitor the kiln, and it contains a Cambridge Temperature recorder. This kiln is part of a significant industrial complex, which, along with the associated Blyth yard at Hoe Hill, is the only tilery on the Humber Bank producing hand-made roof tiles using traditional methods, and possibly the only one in the country. The complete production process can be observed here, from the mill house that processes the clay, through the drying sheds for storing formed tiles, to the kiln for firing them, which includes an office or lobby for the site foreman and those supervising the kiln firing.
