Description

The Municipal Cemetery inner gateway in Grimsby was built in 1888 for the Grimsby Borough Council. This structure features cast-iron gates, piers, and railings. It has a tripartite design with a central carriage entrance that includes double gates, flanked by narrower pedestrian side entrances with single gates. Each side has sections of railings that are approximately 5 metres long.

The three gateways are adorned with ornate Gothic Revival style piers. These piers have a tall stepped plinth, a cross-shaped section above that features narrow lancet panels on the outer faces and nook shafts at the angles. Above this is a short octagonal section with blind quatrefoil panels, a moulded capital, and a spire-shaped cap that includes lucarnes and a finial.

The gates themselves have a frieze panel at the base with pierced quatrefoils, dog-bars with finials above double mid-rails, and full-height bars styled like Gothic columns with capitals and trefoiled arches below the top-rail, topped with spiked finials. The main verticals of the gates are square in section and feature large ball finials. The railings on each side have plain pointed bars, a single top-rail, and column principals with moulded capitals and pointed finials.

This gateway is part of a group with the Municipal Cemetery Lodge and Chapel.
