Description

The house at 107 Park Avenue, Kingston upon Hull, was built between 1877 and 1879 by George Gilbert Scott Junior for John Spyvee Cooper. It is now used as flats. The building is constructed of brick, with decorative pargeted panels, and has a hipped roof covered in plain tiles, featuring two panelled side wall stacks. It is designed in the Queen Anne style, and is part of a group of eight similar houses by Scott, recognised as the only surviving examples of his domestic architecture.

The design includes a brick plinth, string courses, a pargeted frieze, rebated eaves, and moulded wooden guttering. The windows generally have brick flat arches. The building is two storeys high with attics, and has a five-window front. The central window is an eight-pane sash with a segmental head, flanked by pairs of similar sashes, all with segmental heads. Above, a large central brick dormer features a segment-headed eight-pane sash flanked by brick pilasters and a flat roof that was formerly topped with a dome. Smaller hipped dormers are situated on either side, each with a two-light casement.

The central doorway is defined by a round-arched brick doorcase with multiple keystones and a hoodmould, topped by an unglazed opening beneath a brick pediment. The entrance features a moulded six-panel door with an overlight and a wrought-iron grille. Flanking the entrance are square brick bay windows, rebuilt in the mid-20th century, with hipped lead roofs and a pair of eight-pane sashes. Alterations occurred in the mid and late 20th century.
