Description

No. 7 Salisbury Street is a house and adjoining wall built between 1877 and 1879, with alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is likely designed by George Gilbert Scott Jnr for John Spyvee Cooper. The building is constructed of brick with pargeted panels and features a hipped plain tile roof with two panelled side wall stacks, showcasing the Queen Anne style.

The house has a brick plinth, string courses, rebated eaves, and a moulded gutter with brackets. Most windows have brick flat arches. It is two storeys high and has a five-window range. The recessed centre features an 8-pane sash window, with a hipped dormer above that contains a 2-light casement. Below this, there is a projecting brick doorcase with a cornice and a recessed 4-panel door, although the overlight is boarded up.

The projecting flanking bays each have a pair of 8-pane sashes, and above these, there are shouldered shaped gables with a single wider 8-pane sash. Below, each bay has a large 6-pane casement that has replaced the original bay window. The left return of the building has, to the left, a pair of 8-pane sashes and below them, a canted brick bay window with boarded-up windows. To the right, there is a boarded-up window with a shaped brick hoodmould.

Additionally, to the right, there is a coped brick boundary wall with a round-arched doorway and keystone to the left, linking to the adjoining house. This building is part of a group of eight houses designed by Scott, who was a prominent figure in the Queen Anne style, and they are considered the only surviving examples of his esteemed domestic architecture.
