Description
The Tubular Crane, located at the northwest corner of the former Trinity House Buoy Shed, is a tubular jib crane dating from around 1865, which was moved to its current site in 1901. It is constructed from wrought iron plates.
The crane features a curved, 'swan-neck' box-section jib that is sunk into a circular hole in the quayside, with a deep, straight counterweight secured at the base. At the base of the crane, the original gearing cogs, cable drum, and brake are present, partially enclosed by iron-plate safety covers. Additionally, there is a later small electric motor located beneath. The hoist cable runs over guiding wheels at the top of the jib to a hook that is suspended from the apex.
