Description

Pease Court is a group of former warehouses, now converted into flats, built in 1745 and 1760 for Joseph Pease. The buildings are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and feature pantile roofs, topped with a low coped parapet. They rise to four storeys and have a total of 13 windows arranged in a 6:7 pattern. Most of the windows are 20th-century segment-headed 2-light casements.

The 1745 warehouse, located on the right, has a central round-arched recess that extends through three storeys, with imposts inscribed "17-45" and a keystone marked "J P". Each floor features a matchboard infill panel with a 2-light casement, and there is a similar window in the tympanum. On either side of this recess, there are three windows on each floor, while the third floor has seven windows arranged in a 3:1:3 pattern.

The 1760 warehouse, on the left, has five windows on each floor to the left of a round-arched recess that also rises through three floors, with imposts inscribed "17-60" and a keystone marked "J P". Each floor has a matchboard infill panel with a 2-light casement, and in the tympanum, there is a round window covered by a hoist. Above this, there is another segment-headed 2-light casement.

Inside the 1745 warehouse, there are heavy softwood posts, beams, and joists. Joseph Pease was an oil merchant, and during the mid-20th century, the warehouses were used for storing grain. Pease Court is an important example of 18th-century commercial architecture associated with the Old Harbour.
