Description

The Punch Hotel is a public house dating to 1898, designed by Smith, Brodrick & Lowther for the Hull Brewery Co. It is constructed of brick with a granite plinth, terracotta dressings, and a plain tile roof, featuring three large side wall stacks with quoins, double cornices, and panelled tops. The building is in the Tudor Gothic Revival style.

The front elevation is curved and asymmetrical, with five bays. The recessed, off-centre entrance bay has two ogee-headed cross casements and a coped parapet displaying the inscription "Punch Hotel" in raised lettering. Above this entrance is a two-light mullioned window in a projecting surround with a traceried ogee gable and finials. Below the entrance are two segment-arched doorways with traceried lintels. A semicircular bay window with two cross casements occupies the centre, flanked by recessed glazed double doors. Canted bay windows are situated on either side, each with a four-light cross mullioned window on both floors, topped by an ogee traceried balustrade. A terracotta relief panel is located between the floors along the line of the central balustrade. Elaborate shaped gables, each with linked pinnacles and a pair of recessed elliptical arched two-light mullioned windows under a common ogee head, sit above the canted bays. The right side features a square bay window and gable with similar fenestration, while a recessed blank bay with an elliptical-arched pierced balustrade is located to the far right. A porch with a similar balustrade and a segment-headed doorway containing recessed glazed double doors is also present. All gables incorporate Punch head medallions.

The left return has a two-storey lean-to projection enclosed by a coped yard wall with a pair of gatepiers topped with ball finials. A Hull Brewery Co. trademark is in relief on the first floor. A canted stair turret with two basket-arched transomed windows on the first floor stands to its right, followed by a larger cross mullioned window on each floor and a terracotta panel displaying the hotel's name above.

The interior was refitted in the mid-20th century but retains some original features.
