Description
Roland House and Commercial Chambers, formerly known as Ferres Hospital, is located on Prince's Dock Street in Kingston upon Hull. This building was designed in 1822 by John Earle and has undergone late 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of brick with painted ashlar dressings and features a hipped slate roof with two ridge stacks.
The building has a plinth, a ground-floor lintel band, a first-floor sill band, a moulded cornice, and blocking. The projecting center includes three windows topped with a pediment that displays a sculptured crest and trophy. It stands two storeys tall and has a five-window range of 12-pane sash windows with brick flat arches.
The central doorcase is adorned with pairs of Roman Doric pilasters and a mutule cornice, featuring the inscription "Roland House" flanked by anthemions. The entrance consists of a moulded six-panel double door, with flanking lights positioned between the pilasters. On either side of the doorcase, there are single segment-headed tripartite glazing bar sashes. To the right, there is a similar sash window, and to the left, there is another similar opening that contains a six-panel margin-stile door with sidelights and toplights.
