Description
20 Whitefriargate is a mid- to late-18th century house that has been converted into a shop, with alterations made in the mid- to late-19th century. It is designed in a classical style.
The building is constructed of brick with a stucco front and features a slate roof. It has a polygonal plan and was originally part of a block of five houses and shops, which included numbers 16 to 19 Whitefriargate.
The narrow three-storey principal elevation faces north and has a symmetrical three-bay street frontage. The ground floor features a late-20th century shopfront with a recessed central entrance and a fascia sign. On the first floor, there are three horned plate-glass sash windows, each supported by scrolled brackets. The central window is topped with a moulded pediment, while the outer windows have moulded cornices. The second floor contains three plate-glass sash windows with slightly projecting sills. At the top of the elevation, there is a moulded eaves cornice, and the pitched roof is capped by a rendered ridge stack at the west end.
