Description

Ann Watson College, along with its adjoining boundary wall and railings, consists of almshouses built around 1800 and 1850. The structure is made of yellow brick with ashlar dressings and features hipped and gabled slate roofs, which include seven ridge stacks, two gable stacks, and a single side wall stack. The building is two storeys high and has an 18-window range, arranged in an L-plan with a rounded corner.

The main range, located to the right, features a central block that projects forward, flanked by slightly recessed wings. The recessed bays have a first-floor band, while the outer bays display a blank panel between the floors. Most first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with lintels, except for the central window, which has a shouldered surround, cornice, and apron. The third window from the left is a two-light casement. The ground floor mirrors this fenestration with 12-pane sashes, and the central and end windows are topped with cornices. Each of the two-storey wings has one 12-pane sash on each floor.

The rounded corner on the left features a plinth and a brick first-floor band, with four plain sashes, the leftmost of which is slightly shorter. Below this, there is a central four-panel door with a round-arched opening, keystone, and fanlight, flanked by two 9-pane sashes. An addition to the left has similar details, including five plain sashes and, below, four similar sashes. To the right, there is an ashlar doorcase with pilasters and a cornice, leading to a round-headed four-panel door with a keystone. Above this door is a plaque that reads, "College for widows and daughters of clergymen founded by Mrs Ann Watson 1720." Surrounding the property is a brick boundary wall topped with ramped ashlar coping and renewed railings, which include two gates.
