Description

The Chamberlain Almshouses, now two houses, were built in 1800 for Leonard Chamberlain. They are constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and have hipped slate roofs with single ridge and side wall stacks. Deep wooden eaves with decorative brackets run along the roofline. The building is two storeys high and has a four-window front. The windows are 12-pane sash windows with flat brick arches above. The slightly projecting central section features a pair of windows on each floor, topped by a pediment. The pediment contains an oval cartouche inscribed with the date "AD 1800" and the names of the trustees: “P Hill, S Martin, J Thompson, E Thompson”. To either side of the central section, there is a single window on each floor. The ground floor windows on the right are flanked by single fielded six-panel doors with overlights.
