Description

The Church of St Alban is a parish church built in 1938 and completed in 1954, designed by Sir W. Milner and R. B. Craze of Milner & White. It features orange brick with brick dressings and pantile roofs. The structure includes a broad, low square west tower with double doors and a tall three-light window above, set within a deep flat-headed opening with chamfered brick sides and mullions. The plain tower is topped with seven-light bell openings between raised and chamfered mullions that extend upwards to form battlements at the parapet, with chamfered cutaway corners at the top.

The projecting side aisles incorporate porches on either side of the tower, featuring double doors flanked by recessed side panels. The aisles have lean-to roofs and six plain five-light mullion windows with shallow buttresses between them, along with deeply chamfered sills to the west of the transepts and two additional windows further to the east. The transepts have tall gabled facades with a single tall central window. Beyond the chancel, there is a low parish room.

Inside, the church has six bay arcades with plain flat concrete arches and a fine wooden roof supported by six wooden trusses on brick and stone corbels. The interior includes wooden choir stalls and an altar on a three-step plinth, behind which is a tall gilt reredos in the classical style. A fine circular stone font with a moulded base and inscribed band is topped with a bell-canted wooden lid.
