Description

The War Memorial Street Shrine on Sharp Street was erected in 1917 to honor those who served. It features an oak cabinet with a glazed door, showcasing a large single pane of glass.

Inside the cabinet, the roll of honour consists of a central rectangular oak panel with a curved top, decorated with gold-painted scrollwork that reads "SHARP STREET ROLL OF HONOUR." The name P.C. Varey, E.Y. / D.C.M., is prominently displayed within the scroll, and below it, the word "FALLEN" is framed in a painted scroll design. The panel lists 140 men, including Varey, in gold lettering across five columns, detailing their surnames, initials, and abbreviated regiments or units. This panel is surrounded by a simple moulded frame and flanked by two narrow canted panels adorned with gold-painted swags.

The polished oak cabinet features a window with a curved top and a timber frame with chamfered and stopped edges. The window is side-hung with brass hinges and a key escutcheon. On either side of the window, there are oak panels with intaglio carved garlands, each containing photographs of senior military and naval figures in oval frames with gilded surrounds. The cabinet is topped with a scroll pediment that includes a central oval frame holding a photograph of King George V, flanked by intaglio carved Hull City arms.

Currently, the roll of honour cabinet is housed within a glazed aluminium security cabinet, which is mounted on a free-standing brick plinth with stone coping. This structure is located next to the side wall of 85a Newland Avenue, which is not listed, and faces the eastern end of Sharp Street. An attached painted aluminium information panel on the plinth provides details about the individuals involved in the last restoration and the dignitaries who attended its re-dedication in 2014.
