Description

Stepney Station House is a former railway station, now a house, built around 1853. It was designed by William Botterill for the York & North Midland Railway. The building features red and yellow brick with painted ashlar dressings and has hipped and gabled slate roofs. It includes two side wall stacks and a central ridge stack, all with a central round-arched opening, as well as two smaller gable stacks.

The windows are primarily plain sashes with moulded round-arched ashlar surrounds and keystones, and those on the platform side have bracketed sills. The structure consists of a central block with single-storey wings. The central block has a plinth, corner pilasters, and bracketed eaves, standing two storeys tall with a three-window range. The recessed central bay on the platform side features a pair of small round-headed windows, with each flanking gable having a single larger window. Below this, there is a central pilastered surround with an entablature that contains a window, flanked by similar windows.

The flanking wings have brick angle pilasters and wooden modillion eaves, each with a projecting central gable. The right wing has a mounded round-arched doorway with a beaded six-panel door, overlight, and sidelights, while the left wing features a pair of small round-arched windows and a roundel above. The left return has a moulded round-arched doorcase with a keystone and a 20th-century door with an overlight.

The rear elevation of the main block resembles the platform front, with a pair of small blank windows above and a central 20th-century door with an overlight below. The station was constructed on the Victoria Dock line of the York & North Midland Railway.
